Mercedes Cortés is a cantaora from Barcelona. Cortés began her artistic career at the age of 19, paving the way for herself in the flamenco community of Barcelona by working in the tablaos: Los Tarantos and El Cordobés. Soon after, she recorded her first album, Mírame.
In 1999, Cortés worked with the Farruco Family in the Poliorama Theater in Barcelona.
In 2000, she worked for a year and a half in the Tablao de Carmen, where she shared the stage with artists such as La Tolea and Miguel del Toleo, among others. She also participated in the International Congress of Flamenco in Barcelona and filmed a television series for Television Catalán dedicated to dance, accompanied by José Manuel Huertas (Principal Dancer of the Ballet Nacional de España and of Antonio Gades’ Company) and Toni Muñiz (winner of the Youth Competition of Dance in Hospitalet, Spain).
In 2001, Cortés composed and performed two songs on the soundtrack for the film Lola la Gitana directed by Llorenc Serra from Catalán. This same year, she joined Miguel Poveda’s Company, presenting the concert Flamenco en Orquesta, directed by Joan Albert Amargós. She also participated in the company, Con Buen Pie, directed by guitarist Juan Gómez, “Chichuelo.” She worked at the festivals Ciutat Vella and El Grec, at which, in addition to working with Andrés Peña and Mercedes Ruiz, she appeared as a soloist with the same guitarists who play for Juan Ramón Caro and Jorge Flores.
In 2002, she moved to Sevilla and formed part of the Cristina Hoyos’ company in the concert Tierra Adentro. During the same year, she worked with distinguished bailaores such as: Rafael de Carmen, Andres Marin, Andres Peña, and Mercedes Ruiz, among others. In this year’s Bienal, Cortés participated in various concerts, including: Tierra Adentro, Ritmo Jondo (in a duo with Rafael de Utrera), and won the Talented Youth [jóvenes valores] contest, accompanied by Mercedes Ruiz, who was a winner of this same contest. In Sevilla, Cortés also worked in the tablao, Los Gallos.
In 2003, Cortés worked at the Festival de Jerez in courses taught by Javier la Torre, Andres Peña, Mercedes Ruiz and Merche Esmeralda as well as in the concert Dibujos en el Aire by Mercedes Ruiz. This same year, she worked with guitarist Jeronimo Maya and his company, as well as with bailaor Andres Marin’s company.
In 2004, she worked again at the Festival de Jerez in courses taught by Mercedes Ruiz, El Guito and Manolo Marín as well as in the concert Peña by bailaor Andres Peña. This same year, Cortés worked with bailaores Andres Marin, Juan Ogalla, Andres Peña and Mercedes Ruiz. She also appeared as a soloist in the Talia Theater in Valencia. In 2005, Cortés worked once again at the Festival de Jerez in courses by Mercedes Ruiz and Rafael Campallo. She participated as a soloist at youth exchange of peñas flamencas among the youth of Cataluña and Andalucia, appearing in the peña La Parra Flamenca from Granada. She completed a tour through France, Belgium, and Germany with bailaor Andres Peña in the concert Peña.
Soon after, Cortés joined Ramon Martinez’ company in the premier of his concert Flamenco in Rome. She also completed a tour with bailaora Carmen Lozano’s company in Polonia and Madrid in Andalucia Turismo. At the Festival Flamenco (does not specify), she works with bailaora Lidia Valle in Gazpacho de Moron. At the end of 2005, Cortés toured Valencia with her group and becomes part of Juan de Juan’s company in 2006 in the concert Frente a Frente, with which she toured in La Cope through all of Spain. In 2007, she completed a national tour sponsored by La Caixa in which she appeared as a soloist.
